Who is the Referral Program for?

The Peoples Trust Referral Program is designed for business professionals that deal with clients who:

  • Have had credit problems in the past and need to re-build their credit rating
  • Have no credit history and wish to establish good credit (students, and new immigrants)
  • Have filed for bankruptcy or consumer proposal and are trying to re-build their credit rating
  • Have difficulty obtaining unsecured credit cards

If your clients fall into any of the above categories or if you believe you can target these types of clients by utilizing online and off-line advertising methods, you can benefit greatly from our Referral Program.

How does the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard® Credit Card Work?

The Peoples Trust secured Mastercard credit card is a regular Mastercard that requires its limit to be funded with an initial security deposit. The minimum deposit is $500, the maximum is $25,000.

  • Your client’s security deposit is kept in a GIC account that currently earns 0.50% annual interest while they use the line of credit on the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard.
  • The limit of the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard is equal to 100% of your client’s original security deposit. Your client can increase the limit later by adding more funds to their GIC account, but limit increases must be done in increments of $100.
  • Peoples Trust reports your client’s payments to both the Equifax and TransUnion credit bureaus which means that as long as the cardholder is making the required minimum payments on a timely basis, they are building a good credit rating.
  • Your client’s security deposit will be locked into a GIC account as long as their Mastercard account is open. Your client receives the security deposit back (plus interest) after the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard account is closed.

How does the Referral Program Work?

When you sign up for the Referral Program, Peoples Trust will assign you a unique referral code that must be on every application you give out. Peoples Trust pays a commission of $35 for every approved application bearing your referral code. All you do is make application available to your clients on which you’ve marked your code or provide your client with the personalized application link.

What is a referral code?

A referral code is a unique number to identify the source of the referral, and track all the referrals coming from that source/referrer. Once you sign up for the program and become a registered referrer, you will be assigned a referral code. You must use the personalized online application link which will automatically embedded your referral code or you must mark your referral code on each Peoples Trust secured Mastercard application form you hand out in order to receive credit. On the top of each Peoples Trust secured Mastercard application form, there is a designated spot for you to enter your referral code. It is very important that you print your referral code clearly in that spot. If there is no referral code on the Peoples Trust secured Mastercard application form, the system will not capture the source of the referral, and will not generate any referral fee for the agent who produced the referral.

What is the referral commission?

Peoples Trust pays a $35 commission for every approved application.  Peoples Trust also offers a $40 commission for every approved application over 50 in a calendar month.

How is the referral commission paid?

Commission is paid on a monthly basis by issuing a cheque to the referrer, or to the referrer’s company, depending upon the preference made on the Peoples Trust Referral Program Membership Application Form. Please note that the commission generated from referrals in a month will be processed the following month. For example, if your client is approved on February 25 then the commission for this referral will be a “February payment” and will be processed early March, after the month of February is complete.

Should I select pay to the agent or company?

Peoples Trust gives you the option of selecting the fee “payable to the agent”, or “payable to the agent’s company” based on the agent’s preference. If in doubt, please contact your head office and check with them first to make sure receiving a referral commission directly to your name is not against your company policy.

How do I sign up for the Peoples Trust Referral Program?

Read the Service Agreement, fill out the Peoples Trust Membership Application Form, sign and fax it to 604-694-6209 or e-mail to securedcard@peoplestrust.com.

  • You may call Peoples Trust toll-free at 1-877-694-6200 or local 604-694-6200 and ask for a Peoples Trust Referral Membership Form, and a service agreement. We will fax or e-mail it to you immediately (depending on your preference).
  • Once we receive your membership application form, we will review and, if approved, we will send you an e-mail with your referrer code, and personalized applications links for our online application forms which will automatically embedded your code.

How do I obtain the Mastercard application forms for my clients?

The Peoples Trust secured Mastercard Credit Card application form can easily be completed from our web site. We encourage you to referrer your customer directly to the online Peoples Trust secured Mastercard credit card application form at https://forms.peoplestrust.com/mastercardapplication/?ref=00000 Note: In order for your referral code to automatically be placed in the application you must ensure you replace the 00000 in the link above with your unique 5 digit referral code. The new link would look like this: https://forms.peoplestrust.com/mastercardapplication/?ref=insert your 5 digit code. We also have application brochures available to be mailed out upon request.

How does the Application Process work for my clients?

The application process is very simple:

  • Have your client fill out the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard online application form completely while ensuring that your personalized referral link was used.
  • Have your client prepare the security deposit payable to Peoples Trust for a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $25,000.
  • Have your client follow the instructions provided on step 5 and in the confirmation email on how to forward their security deposit to Peoples Trust.

How do I process the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard Credit Card application?

If you are meeting with your clients face to face:

  • Please ensure that the online form was accessed through your personalized application link and that the application form is fully completed and submitted by the client.
  • Complete the ID Verification form and copies of 2 pieces of ID for the client.
  • Return the completed ID Verification form and copies of the ID by fax at 604-694-6209 or email at SecuredCard@peoplestrust.com.
  • Have your client follow the instructions provided on step 5 and in the confirmation email on how to forward their security deposit to Peoples Trust.

If you are not meeting with your clients face to face there is no processing required. If your client requires assistance, they can phone our customer service at 1-877-694-6200.

How do I promote the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard Card on my web site?

Under the Online Referral Resources link on the left we have several different banners, logos, and links that you may use on your site to promote the card. When your client clicks on the link or banner they will be directed to our website https://forms.peoplestrust.com/mastercardapplication/?ref=insert your 5 digit code,  where they can complete the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard application form. Each application generated through this process will automatically insert your referral code onto the application form to ensure the application is recognized as your referral. You must however ensure that the referral code is the one that it was assigned to you.

What are the advantages of the Easy Online Referral system?

The Peoples Trust online referral system has great advantages for you, some of which are as follows:

  • You will generate more referrals, even without meeting with clients face to face. Most clients try to locate the card issuer and contact the card issuer directly, even though they hear about the product on your web site. The Peoples Trust online referral system eliminates this problem. When your client clicks on the link from your web site, it will take your client to the Peoples Trust website, where they can complete a Mastercard application form which will have your referral code on it.
  • Peoples Trust provides logos and banners for your website at no additional cost, which function as links for downloading the application form.
  • Because your web site will be linked with ours, you will not need to update your web site if (for example) interest rates or fees change.  All the changes will be done at Peoples Trust.

How does the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard credit card help my client establish credit?

Peoples Trust reports the payment history of your clients to the major credit bureaus, Equifax and TransUnion, on a monthly basis. As long as your clients are regularly making the minimum payments on their Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard account, they are building a positive rating. Please note that the security deposit only acts as collateral and doesn’t exempt your client from making payments to their Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard account.

Other than the application form and the security deposit, are any other documents necessary?

If the client has recently had an address change we may request a proof of address (such as a copy of any bill with the clients name and current address)

What if one of my clients does not have personal cheques?

Please note the reason that we request personal cheques:

The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) regulations regarding anti-money laundering procedures requires us to verify client information with two pieces of identification prior to opening an account. Since this was done when the personal chequing account was opened, and we are unable to meet most of our clients face to face, we fulfill this requirement by only accepting personal cheques.

If an applicant is unable to provide a personal cheque: They may send a bank draft, providing the application is accompanied with a Verification of Identification form completed by a Registered Referring Agent of Peoples Trust as well as copies of the identification that was physically seen by the agent. Peoples Trust will require two pieces of identification issued by a Canadian Government agency, one of these must contain a photograph and signature.

Who qualifies for the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard?

Your clients are virtually guaranteed approval for the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard Credit Card.  Our program is specifically designed for clients who have had credit problems in the past, or who have no established credit history. Credit clients must meet some basic approval qualifications.  To be eligible for a Peoples Trust Mastercard the client must:

  • have a verifiable permanent Canadian home address
  • be of legal age in the province in which they reside
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number
  • have a verifiable source of income

How may I advertise the Peoples Trust Secured Mastercard Program?

There are several possible approaches to promoting our Program. Peoples Trust has an Easy Online Referral system to help you promote Peoples Trust on your website (please see the following two questions for details).  You may also choose to promote the card through print advertising; for that we ask that you please forward us your final proof so for Mastercard approval before the advertisements go out to potential clients.  This applies to any advertising with the Peoples Trust or Mastercard name/logos. Peoples Trust can also provide application brochures with a brochure stand for display.

When do I need to use the ID Verification Form?

OSFI regulations covering AML procedures require verification of identification for every account opened. The ID Verification is required for all clients that are seen in person (face to face). Peoples Trust will require two pieces of identification issued by a Canadian Government agency, one of these must contain a photograph and signature.
